my story

I was normanl until I got a high fever which caused a siezure when I was 2. I also got a lot of shots at once. I started SCREAMING every chance I got, and crying on a regular basis. I only made wierd noises or I repeated everything I heard. I did not talk. My motor skills were lacking. I could not run, jump, hop, skip, cut, color in the lines. I Had ZERO social skills. I made NO eye-contact whatsoever, and I was HYPER!!! My aunt's sister said somthing about autism, but my parents believed what was then the popular no-label story: that I had multiple learning disabilities and I was hyper, and that I WOULD GROW OUT OF IT BY 16!!
I went to a special ed. pre-school for 3 years. I was getting caught up in my motor skills and talking. I was 5 when I was man enough to answer "yes" or "no" when the teacher asked me if I wanted juice. Brfore then, I responded "yes-or-no"! I also got special help in kindergarten and first grade. In second grade, all help was dropped, and I was lost in the system. I still acted strangly, I still did not socialize. I was home schooled until I was 17.
At 16, I lost it! My mind snapped. I went to the University of Washington and I was labeled with autism. I have been autistic all along! I knew that I was not socialble, nor made eye-contact, I knew I acted weird and lived in my imagination every chance I got, but for some reason, they thought that I will grow out of it by 16!
I went to high school in September of 1999, and I started special olympics in the spring. I was in swimming , and I won 6 medals. By the time 2000 came around, my new medicines put me on an even keel, and I won 8 medals in track and field! I still did not know how to run properly until then! In August, I joined my high school's naval junior reserve officer training corps. I went to a week long boot camp, and graduated as a platoon honor cadet and a member of honor platoon! As far as jrotc went, iended up with 2 medals, 18 ribbons, numerous certificates, named cadet of the month, and a rank of cadet senior chief!!
I graduated from high school 3.8 GPA, and read an origional poem at the ceremonies. I was vice president of the german club, which I LOVED because I am 3/8 german and going tot he big high school annual german convention was FUN!!
I was in Special Olympics for 10 year now with 94 medals in 6 sports. I competed at 10 consecutive state summer games in Fort Lewis winning at least 1 gold medal at the games! I am a 24-time state champion!! I will be competing at my 11th state games in shot put, relay, 5k walk and 800m walk.

what does it mean?

What does "brave in the attempt" mean? Does it mean machismo, or being a daredevil, or taking foolish risks? NO! "Brave in the attempt" means no matter how many times you fall, you get back up and keep going! It means that no matter how far behind you are, you still keep going without let up. IT means you give your best no matter how you finish. It means you finish no matter what. It means you don't give up, give in or quit before time is up!
It also means sportsmanship!! Brave in the attempt means you show good sportsmanship NO MATTER WHAT!!! Cursing, arguing, fighting, yelling, and insults are no being brave in the attempt. Being arrogant about your win in not being brave in the attempt either!
Brave in the attempt means you give it your all without holding yourself back just so you can get an easier competition. Sandbagging and cheating are NOT brave in the attempt. Sandbagging is a form of cheating anyways since you are cheating you competition by holding yourself back in a trial event. Is taht being brave in the attempt?! I think not. Taking drugs to enhance performance is not brave in the attempt, not is haveing a bad attitude. Leave it to the coach to argue with the officials!
MAny years ago at a district softball tournament, one of our teams was NOT being brave in the attempt! Almost all of them were crying like babies and WOULD NOT EVEN GET UP TO GO TO BAT! They gave up too soon. One of thier players threatened her coach with a bat! Another player was cursing up a storm and pounding on the fence, THier coach said that even if they got invited to the state games, they were not going! That kind of behavior is NOT brave!
